WHERE IS THAT SINGING COMING FROM?

by Tara McClenahan

Last week I was getting Little Man ready for bed and putting on his jammies. He hadn’t had a nap that day (something we are struggling with since taking away the pacifier) so he was grumpy and fighting me and I was quickly losing my patience! Then a thought popped into my head: “I can sing to him!”

I’ve sung to Little Man since he was in the womb! I love to sing and was on my church’s praise team for almost six years including while I was pregnant. I made up a song when he was a newborn and would sing it to him every night as I was “loving him down” to sleep. The song is what he calls “Bye-o Bye-o Baby” (and he requests it OFTEN!).

I started singing this song in a soft voice to my uncooperative toddler and it had an almost instantaneous effect! He immediately stopped squirming around, visibly relaxed every muscle in his body and his eyes became droopy. WOW! I should find a way to bottle this!

It did get me to thinking about this verse in Zephaniah 3:17:

“The Lord your God is with you,
He is mighty to save.
He will take great delight in you,
He will quiet you with His love,
He will rejoice over you with singing.”

I was blown away – God sings over me! Can you picture that? Even when we are fighting and grumpy and uncooperative, He shows His love and sings over us! And when we stop long enough to listen, we too will relax and allow Him to do the work He wants to do in us.

Are you out of sorts? Fighting against something? Distracted? Too busy? Overwhelmed?

Listen….God is singing over you!

My son has Asperger's Syndrome and if not for singing, I would have even less sleep than I already survive on. I do believe 100%, you don't need to be a good singer, you just need to sing... sing his praises, his glory and his promise. How can one be anything but content when they sing. Hugs. tammy

What a beautiful appropriate video to illustrate a beautiful post. It is said that music soothes the savage beast. It even soothes a restless toddler. I think this post will help a lot of people. Thank you for sharing it.

What a wonderful gift He has given us ~ the ability to sing. Personally I'm a joyful noise, and do a lot of whistling instead (: You're right, singing soothes the soul. Thank you for this beautiful illustration. And thanks for visiting my blog. I'm expanding my borders!

I know God loves music! Look at David in the bible! I never thought about the Lord singing over us but it makes sense. I have a favor to ask. Please visit MizMollye's son Buddy at his new blog. He is really hurting. I want to have a support and prayer system for him. Please stop by.

Such a sweet post ~ I love that verse and song. I wrote a lullaby that is on my music blog. I need to finish a song I wrote about God compassing around us with songs of deliverance. Thanks for your sweet visit. I have had computer problems.

Your post brings to mind when I use to sing to my little grandson. I always thought he enjoyed it..I sure did. Then one day at age three he put his little hands on each cheek and looked into my eye's and said in a quiet pleading voice,"Nonnie, Please don't sing to me any more." It comforts me to know that perhaps the Lord took my place and sang over him.
